Flying high towards a sustainable future

Europe is on its way to make flying a sustainable means of transportation. HIGFLY has the unique potential to develop a set of technologies that will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

The HIGFLY project will develop the next generation of technologies for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from abundant second generation feedstock, such as forestry and agricultural residues and biogenic waste, valorising them in a resource, energy and cost effective, sustainable manner.

Driven to develop and demonstrate innovative technologies in a step-wise approach and under industrially relevant conditions (at TRL3-4), the HIGFLY project will elaborate robust catalytic materials and sustainable solvents for the renewable energy sector.

HIGFLY'S technologies have the unique potential to increase the total share of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the EU jet fuel market. In this way HIGFLY addresses EU priorities for decarbonizing the aviation sector through key measures under development in the ReFuelEU Aviation Initiative.

HIGFLY'S main objectives

Utilise abundant and sustainable feedstocks, focusing on feedstock flexibility and synergies across the bioenergy sector.

Develop an innovative, highly-efficient and scalable reactor, and separation technologies to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel in a resource, energy and cost-effective manner, while producing new and robust catalytic materials and sustainable solvents for the renewable energy sector.

Advance the knowledge of these innovative technologies through evaluation of the entire value chain, from feedstock(s) to sustainable aviation fuel to demonstrate the environmental, social and techno-economic advantages.

The use of sustainable aviation fuels in the EU is currently limited, it needs to sharply increase.

In a net-zero Europe 2050, flying will remain an important form of mobility. To be able to meet the strict and ambitious targets on CO2 emissions set by the aviation sector, the development and prompt deployment of novel technologies able to convert abundant and sustainable resources into sustainable aviation fuels is a priority.

The ReFuelEU Aviation Initiative develops key actions to decarbonize the aviation sector.

The HIGFLY project addresses EU priorities through the development of high performance technologies and their integration in EU's energy system, by reducing the cost of key technologies through maximizing resource and energy efficiency and by strengthening market uptake through intensive early-stage cooperation of experts along the entire value chain.

HIGFLY'S Priorities

  • HIGFLY will contribute to strengthen EU technological and economic leadership in the bioenergy sector by developing innovative, scalable technologies to produce sustainable aviation fuel, thus enabling the European innovation base across the energy sector and the chemical industry.
  • The advanced technologies developed by HIGFLY will have a significant socio-economic impact in terms of job generation and businesses.
  • Sectors associated with the construction, operation and R&D, feedstock logistics, distribution and/or production will benefit from the expected project results.
  • The international cooperation within the HIGFLY consortium is a key feature to achieve impactful scientific endeavors in relevant disciplines and ensure global impact of the technology developments.
  • HIGFLY'S technologies contribute to The Blue Growth Strategy by offering new process chains to further support the development of the European aquaculture sector and utilization of macroalgae as feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel production.

The Project Consortium and some data

To ensure a successful delivery of the project and its impact, the HIGFLY consortium brings together experts along the entire value chain with a well balanced mix of academia, applied research institutes and industry across four countries (3EU + 1 UK).

HIGFLY united a team of top technology developers, recognized experts in material sciences and engineering, key business specialists in the field of sustainable aviation fuels, scientists contributing to policy making and end users.

Each of the partners of the consortium contribute with their unique positioning and expertise, supporting the technology developments of HIGFLY from an early-development stage and accelerating the market uptake.

The opportunity to combine the development of innovative technologies with step-wise integration under industrially relevant conditions, will allow HIGFLY to assess the techno-economic feasibility, sustainability and social impacts of the technology in the framework of the European industrial scenario.
